with AYN Senior Teacher Michelle Ryan Saturday April 9, 2016 3-5pm This workshop is done in conjunction with the Valley Ayurveda Spring Cleanse: April 11-15th We've partnered with Brooksley Williams of Valley Ayurveda to offer students an opportunity to find greater health and wellbeing this Spring through the practice of Yoga AND the art and science of Ayurveda!
Yoga and Ayurveda are two interrelated branches that arose in conjunction with each other in ancient India. Each grew out of the great tree of ancient Vedic knowledge that encompasses all of human life - and the entire universe. Ayurveda arose alongside the spiritual practice of Yoga, to work hand-in-hand with it’s methods and practices, as a tool and means for the spiritual freedom of the practitioner.
In this two hour workshop, Michelle will guide participants thought an abbreviated and accessible series of yoga postures, based on the Ashtanga Yoga Primary Series sequence - known as Yoga Chikitsa, or Yoga Therapy.
The Primary Series posture sequence was developed in the early 20th century by the Father of modern Yoga, T.K.V. Krishnamacharya and his student, Ashtanga Master, Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, to help increase the digestive health and wellbeing of the Yoga aspirant (the idea being that, without a healthy body, Self Realization is that much harder to attain!)
The postures you will learn are based on ancient teachings of yoga, codified into beneficial sequences specifically designed to address a host of digestive and physiological problems. You’ll work with Michelle to integrate this basic sequence, and you’ll also learn more about the specific digestive benefits of each posture, too. It is a simple but beneficial yoga posture practice that will integrate with your Spring Cleanse to help detoxify, tone and cleanse your entire digestive system, helping to bring you to greater wellbeing and health. You’ll get to take home a posture worksheet, too.
In addition to the posture sequence, Michelle will share the Four Purifications of Baba Hari Dass, a quick and simple daily series of gentle pranayama or breathing exercises designed to cleanse and purify both the digestive system and calm the nervous system. Finally, Michelle will teach a basic daily chant or mantra designed to enhance both individual and worldly wellbeing. All are welcome to attend, even those with no yoga experience.
