At Ashtanga Yoga Northampton, we teach old school Ashtanga Yoga in the tradition of Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, as it was handed down to him from his own teacher, the Father of modern Yoga, Tirumalai Krishnamacharya. Our yoga classes are welcoming, intelligent and appropriate for all students regardless of their ability or experience. Besides traditional Mysore Ashtanga classes, we offer Led (fully guided) Ashtanga, Yin Yoga and Vinyasa style yoga classes as well.

This unique style originated in Mysore, India and is the traditional and ideal method for learning Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga. The teacher works with the student one-on-one, to first introduce breathing, movement (vinyasas), gaze (dristis), and internal energy locks (bandhas) within the framework of Sun Salutations, followed by standing postures, a closing sequence, and rest. The student develops and deepens their practice with the help of the teacher, working at their own breath rate, and gaining in strength, flexibility and proficiency over time. It does not take long to learn with regular, consistent attendance. Postures can be individually tailored to meet specific physical needs and ability levels. As the student continues to practice with us, the teacher will continue to "add" postures to their practice, simultaneously helping them integrate and deepen. Dedicated, consistent students are taught first the Primary then the Intermediate Ashtanga Series. All new students are highly recommended to attend Mysore class for a month to determine affinity, and to establish a strong base of learning. Yin Yoga 75 minutes For all levels; Drop-ins always welcome. Yin Yoga is a complementary yoga practice to dynamic, active yoga styles such as Ashtanga Yoga. Postures are practiced on the floor and each is held for several minutes, allowing the deep layers of connective tissue to be gently and safely stretched. Yin Yoga restores and maintains the natural mobility of the joints and tissues closest to our core and encourages the free flow of energy throughout the body. Emphasizing stillness and an attitude of quiet acceptance, Yin Yoga can help practitioners develop or deepen mindful meditation.
"I love Yin Yoga because it offers a more intimate relationship between my mind and body - more than any other type of Yoga I've done - truly ‘in the moment’, almost like a meditation. I drive all the way from the Berkshires to Georgiann's Yin class. She guides you through the poses with a loving, gentle manner (including some poetry and humor), and I leave feeling completely transformed on my drive home!" – Vic B.
"I never thought Yin Yoga would be for me. I like strenuous, sweaty flow...but my first Yin class taught me a lesson: it takes way more strength and commitment to hold a pose than it does to get into a pose. Afterward I felt calm and accomplished, and that feeling lasted for days. I'm looking forward to more Yin exploration!" – Amy G.
