Private sessions with Senior Teacher and AYN founder Michelle Ryan are personalized, focused time in which we tailor your Ashtanga yoga practice for you. We focus on the system of Ashtanga yoga and its sensible, joyful practice, including therapeutic approaches to doing Ashtanga asana (posture), along with Ayurvedic daily self-care practices and yoga philosophy as needed for you.
Why work with Michelle?
You might want to begin with a private session for many reasons, and you can contact Michelle via phone or email (see our footer below for links) to discuss your needs and tailor a session that works for you. While our Mysore Ashtanga classes are like private yoga in a group session, new students may need some one-on-one guidance free of distractions, direct with a teacher, in order to feel a sense of proficiency before joining our Mysore practice community, to learn the basics of Ashtanga yoga, one-on-one in a private setting.
Or, if you're already an established Ashtanga practitioner, you might want to experience a private session with Michelle to gain integral, private, tailored guidance in the Ashtanga yoga system and to deepen your Ashtanga practice.
You may need to have Michelle assess underlying structural issues and come up with a plan of action to help resolve and/or address it, for example, to develop a safe, individualized yoga practice that will help with injury, pregnancy (pre and post partum), or pain/injury.
You may also want to learn Ayurvedic techniques, pranayama practices and Sanskrit chanting. Michelle teaches these in her private sessions, too.
Michelle has been teaching Ashtanga yoga for over 15 years, most of it in the Mysore style, which itself is like semi-private yoga in a group session. This depth of experience has given her a wealth of knowledge through working with thousands of yoga students and yoga bodies over the years! She has been practicing yoga for almost 30 years, bringing her own experience as a veteran practitioner and teacher to her private sessions, imbuing her methodology with an integrated stability, wisdom and compassion.
What is a typical private yoga session?
Each session lasts ninety minutes. We'll start with postural analysis, and an assessment of your particular needs or challenges, then begin doing asana or breath work together. Michelle will asses your practice no matter what your level of experience, teaching you the classical Ashtanga Vinyasa sequences, starting with suryanamaskars if you are brand new. This is a recommended way to learn how to join our regular Mysore community if you don't want to start in our group Intro course. If you have an established Ashtanga practice, Michelle will assess your needs, and offer intelligent modifications, alternatives or options to the classical Ashtanga sequence, or building blocks to deepen your practice, all tailored in a way so that your practice works for you. As you're guided intelligently by Michelle through the postures of the Ashtanga series, you might receive hands on guidance through the session, with options to stop and dialogue and "workshop" aspects of the practice that are challenging for you. At times, Michelle might also offer private clients instruction and guidance for simple daily Ayurvedic practices that can help balance dis-ease in your body, along with other tools from Eastern philosophy that can help with the psychological and emotional aspects that often arise during yoga practice, too.
At the end of your session, Michelle provides notes from the session, and offers continued support in our Mysore and Led classes, and via email and phone afterwards, too.
Cost: Individual rate: $65 for one ninety minute session, $150 for a three-session package. Semi-private rate (2 people): $85 for two students sharing the 90 minute session
