Mysore style Ashtanga Yoga is semi-private yoga in a group yoga setting, where all students practice the same or similar asana sequences, but certain asana may be tailored/altered to accommodate the changing needs of any practitioner.
You're never late for a Mysore class; established students may arrive and leave at their convenience. When you're new, though, come early in the session, within the first 30 minutes.
Students get one-on-one, semi-private instruction in Mysore class. YOU DO NOT NEED TO KNOW THE POSTURE SEQUENCE : WE WILL TEACH IT TO YOU AND HELP YOU MEMORIZE THE SEQUENCE OVER TIME.
Students who dedicate themselves learn to integrate a sequence of postures they can do anytime, anywhere, without the need of a teacher.
Developing a self-practice is the essence of Ashtanga Yoga. At AYN, we teach Ashtanga in a way that encourages and supports the self-empowerment and self-awareness of the student. We are facilitators. Your practice ultimately becomes your teacher.
How does Mysore class work?
If you have never done Ashtanga yoga before - regardless of your previous experience doing or even teaching yoga - you will be guided through a portion of the Ashtanga sequence, and then encouraged to repeat this, and, over time, you'll memorize what you've learned.
Repetition is key to learning Ashtanga Yoga. Teacher instruction & repetition on your own, teacher instruction & repetition on your own, etc. is the learning model in the Mysore room. Coming as often as you can makes learning easier!
Mysore style Ashtanga is traditionally taught via verbal instruction and non-violent, therapeutic hands-on assists. If you do not wish to be touched by the teacher, please let them know before you begin class. We respect this need, and have been trained in trauma-sensitive instruction, teaching with verbal and visual cues only.
As you commit to your practice and come consistently, we will work with you to develop a safe and sustaining self-practice, sharing more about Ashtanga Yoga over time.
Your first classes will be about an hour, and get longer as you dedicate yourself to learning more.
Every time you practice with us is a chance to deepen your practice and become more adept at Ashtanga Yoga.
Come as often as you can, once a day, up to six days a week if you wish. (One day is needed for rest.)
We welcome new students to ANY Mysore class; please arrive in the first 30 minutes of the session.
New students are also welcome to drop-in to ANY of our weekday Led/Group Ashtanga Classes OR Yin Yoga Classes. Please arrive about 10 minutes before Led and Yin classes - which teach students as a group vs. individually - to meet the teacher and settle in.
Register for courses, or purchase class cards online.
The more you practice Ashtanga in the Mysore style, the quicker you will develop an integrated, refined and flowing yoga practice you can do anywhere, anytime, without the need for a teacher.
