BERYL BENDER BIRCH

AT ASHTANGA YOGA NORTHAMPTON

A transformative and rich weekend of Asana, Pranayama, Yoga Nidra,
Teaching as Service, and Evolving our Practice with age or injury.

Ashtanga Yoga Northampton is proud to welcome back internationally renowned author and yoga teacher Beryl Bender Birch. Beryl's early encouragement and advancement of the principle of "service" as a means to finding happiness and self-realization were instrumental in helping create the mindset of service that is the focus of all the teachers of Ashtanga Yoga Northampton. We are thrilled to have our beloved teacher come to share her lighthearted wisdom and compassionate teaching with us!

The weekend with Beryl will be held from the evening of Friday April 20 through Sunday morning, April 22.

Friday 4/20, 6-9pm:  WHY ARE YOU HERE?
Introduction to the weekend and discussion of Why are you here? Why do you do yoga? Unwind from your week with light asana practice followed by yoga nidra (guided deep relaxation).

Saturday 4/21, 9am-12pm:  DETOX FOR BODY AND MIND
Practice the Present Power sequence of postures (combination of 1st and 2nd series) designed for detox and healing. Many options will be given to accommodate various ages and abilities, and whether you prefer a more or less vigorous practice.  The morning will conclude with pranayama – the cultivation of conscious breathing trains the mind to be present and is a gateway to the True Self.

Saturday 4/21, 1:30-4:30pm: YOGA SERVICE - TEACHING TO SPECIAL POPULATIONS
Beryl's greatest mission is to get teachers out of the studios and out into the world, doing service - SEVA - and demonstrating that yoga is not just about teaching movement and exercise, but also about giving back to those who do not always have the privilege to experience the transformative power of these ancient practices. We will spend time discussing the role of yoga in today’s world and will examine the work of the Give Back Yoga Foundation.  The variety of special populations supported by GBYF include The Prison Yoga Project, Y12SR, Yoga for Cancer, Mindful Yoga Therapy for Veterans, Yoga for Trauma, Yoga for PTS & TBI, Eat Breathe Thrive (yoga for disordered eating), etc. and offer training programs and best practices to certified teachers looking to work in these fields.

Sunday 4/22, 9am-12pm:  BOOMER YOGA - SUSTAINING FITNESS WITH INJURY OR AGE
Boomer Yoga provides therapy for mind, body and spirit, offering both experienced and novice yoga practitioners the tools to adapt yoga techniques to their age, lifestyle, and physical health. Beryl will show how to "take charge of change" and create and/or modify a healthy yoga practice that includes more than asana - a practice that will effectively and beautifully work for us as we mature in body and mind OR help us sustain our practice as we work with injury.
